Indirect Mosaic Instruction

The following are step-by-step instructions for creating mosaics using the indirect method. There is no gluing or grouting required. These instructions can be applied to any coaster, box or stepping stone project.

  1. Step 1

Place glass in mold Trace along the bottom edge of the mold onto clear contact paper (contact paper is available from stained glass and craft suppliers and grocery stores). Using a scissors, trim contact paper as needed to fit inside of the mold. Set trimmed contact paper to the side. Note that the contact paper should be smooth and free of creases.
  2. Step 2

Using a paper towel, apply a thin coat of petroleum jelly along the inner surface of the mold.
  3. Step 3

Pour cement Create and place a pattern in the center of the mold face up. Peel the backing off the contact paper and place in the mold sticky side up, over the pattern.
  4. Step 4

Following the pattern, place tesserae on the contact paper. All pieces should be placed slightly apart (approximately 1/8 inch) and in from the mold?s edge to allow room for cement. Note: when using glass the desired side of the glass will be face down (like an upside down cake).
  5. Step 5

Release from mold Adjust tesserae as necessary and press them firmly onto the contact paper.
  6. Step 6

Mix outdoor cement following the directions and precautions on the cement label (note: Jennifer's Outdoor Cement is specially formulated for mosaic projects). If you wish to color your cement, add Colorants to the water, and then pour mixture into the cement.
  7. Step 7

When mixed, pour cement slowly and evenly into the mold. Do not move the mold while the cement is drying.
  8. Step 8

Tap the sides of the mold for two to three minutes to release any air bubbles in the cement.
  9. Step 9

Wait approximately thirty minutes to one hour (time may vary due to climate) for the cement to harden. The cement will warm as it hardens. Once it has cooled and set (no visible water on the surface) remove the stone from the mold.
  10. Step 10

Remove the stone by turning the mold over and lifting up the edges of the mold. The stone should release after several gentle pulls on either side of the mold.
  11. Step 11

Peel off the contact paper and clean off any excess cement covering the glass. You may clean the cement with a paper towel, sponge or craft knife.
  12. Step 12

If any air bubbles blemishes the surface of the cement, fill in by mixing up a small amount of outdoor cement into a paste and rubbing the cement into the holes in a circular motion. If the surface of your stone gets any marks or contact paper lines on the cement you may smooth the cement out with fine sandpaper.
  13. Step 13

Allow stone to cure for 24-48 hours.
